Welcome to Speckled Hen Soaps!

My name is Peggy and I am the maker and marketer behind SHS! Please allow me to introduce myself and my soap journey. I have been a full time mom of 6 for many years now. Most of my kids have grown and flown, however, they are still a big part of what I do! When everyone was young and at home, we delved into the craft of soapmaking. It was fun and exciting to experience the magic and mystery of making our own soap. What is this chemical process that turns butters and oils into a hard block that creates lather and cleans and moisturizes the skin?? Amazing!

We learned a lot and had lots of fun….and soon lots of soap laying around! So began another leg of our journey—selling at the local farmers market, then creating a website and selling on line. My children learned so much through this experience—how to work with customers, how to be precise in weights and measures, how to express their creativity, how to work with money and turn a profit, how to create labels, signage and flyers.

Through the years the soap business grew and the kids moved away from home, leaving mom as a sole proprietor….business was booming, but it got to be a little much. Two years ago I closed the doors of our soap business. Believe me, that was a sad day. About a year later a young lady purchased the business and it is alive and well today!

A year after that, the itch returned—they say it’s in the blood….the itch never leaves. That appears to be true!

Out of respect for the new owners of our old business, I decided to try something different—tallow soap! Tallow IS all the rage, and with good reason! Tallow is loaded with wonderful nutrients for the skin, and it is “bio-identical” to human skin, sharing many of the same properties. This means it is easily absorbed by human skin. All of the wonderful nutrients in tallow make their way into the fat layer of our skin, they don’t just sit on top to be washed away. Rich in vitamins A, D, E and K as well as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, tallow leaves skin soft and smooth.

Tallow soaps last longer. I have been amazed at how long a bar of tallow soap lasts! Tallow bars also do not get all goopy….they don’t leave globs of soap in a soap dish or on a shower rack.

Our soaps and skin care products also contain coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, essential oils, and other botanicals, oils and butters to beautify the product and benefit the skin. Nothing artificial ever!

A certain amount of everything we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies-this is called transdermal absorption. I take this very seriously. Not only do I strive to create beautiful natural products, I keep health in mind. You don’t want to be using toxic products that mess with your hormones, do you? You will never find seed oils or petroleum based ingredients in our products. If you’ve never considered the effect of your skin care on your health, I encourage you to do.
